Damn. They did it. They elected Arnold Schwarzenegger. I feel very disconnected from politics. I voted, of course I did. I've voted in every single election and by-election that has happened since I got the franchise (except for one when I was living in England and couldn't find a Commissioner of Oath to witness my absentee ballot). I voted for McGovern, for Hart, for Nader. I just can't understand what the electorate sees in the Nixon, Reagan, Bush crowd. I just can't.

I would like to share the wise words of my friend Andre Porto in Rio de Janeiro. Andre has worked very hard on creating a culture of peace and his organization has destroyed thousands of hand guns that would otherwise be killing people in the favelas.

"It seems like mankind needs new heroes and peace myths. Hollywood is one of the main promoters of a Culture of War and they are constantly briefed by the Pentagon. Arnie symbolizes the barbarian, the terminator, the power through death. He has dedicated decades to build up that imagine.

Perhaps we should all try to be more careful before supporting such symbols of violence. To build up a Culture of Peace has a lot to do with re-creating positive images. That is not what the political marketing of Arnie does using his violent movies' jargons all the time."

Today is Dennis Kucinich's birthday. I am going over to a birthday picnic at Stanford on my lunch hour. I am wearing my Kucinich t-shirt that says "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be elected... Kucinich for President". I wish I could believe that.
