O tempora, o mores!
Aug. 4th, 2005 02:27 pmIn Bruce Elkins' Simplicy & Success Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 12, July 5, 2005, he mentioned this quote. I have never been a member of the simplicity movement myself but I love the way ancient folks grappled with so many of the same problems. Comfort, courtesans and cakes sounds just fine to me!
Even Socrates, the Athenian philosopher who lived in the 4th century BC, grasped the impact of dichotomies of desire on behavior.
"Many people," he said, "will not be satisfied with the simpler way of life. They will be for adding sofas, and tables, and other furniture; also dainties, and perfumes, and incense, and courtesans, and cakes. "
It seems that even 2400 years ago the desire for comforts and conveniences competed with the desire for "plain living and high thinking."
