So, back to me instead of interesting news stories. *wry grin* Yesterday was my day at MacWorld. The new laptops are quite nice looking. I'd have to think hard about the 12 inch if I was in the market just because of the increased portability. OTOH, I don't mostly carry my laptop around... I carry a zip disk and my Visor and leave my Wallstreet by the bed where I do most of my home computing. Luckily I don't have to think about this right now.

I got informed in my personnel discussion earlier this week that I am the last MacOs 9.2 holdout in the lab (we have 1/3 Mac users here... I love that). Also we have some OS X stuff coming up to test so I have to upgrade. *cringe* Yaah! I don't want to be switched. ;-) (I trust you all saw this OS X switched parody video)

The only thing I bought at MacWorld was a cool red leather case for my iPod and a car charger and various other little connectors. MacSense announced a "HomePod" that will allow users to to beam MP3 files on their wireless network for pickup anywhere in the house. I suspect there will be one of those in our future! We're up to 3,200 songs on my iPod! I note that this has slowed down the searching for artist/album/etc a bit. My cute little red leather stuffed to the gills iPod (well, 3/4 full ;-).

I was tempted to upgrade Painter but I haven't done any artwork in too long to justify it. And I don't know when I'd have the time. *sigh* I haven't done a painting or even written a poem in about two years. I am working (in a fairly desultory fashion) on the design for a Dionysos painting but who knows when I'll even have the rough pencil done let alone start the #($# painting. I keep thinking that when I am no longer working two jobs I will get some artwork done. I guess we'll find out in a few months. Planetree will probably move in March or April.

Kurt & Marina and I wandered MacWorld together which was fun. They bought l ots of things which was fun for me. I love the energy of buying things but I'd rather not expend it myself. ;-) They were good stolling companions and Marina's bright flowered skirt definitely made it easier to rendevouz then Kurt and my drab business clo thes. (Aside: When did I start wearing a black blazer every day and what is wrong with this picture?! Note to self - check the travelsmith catalog and see if they have a red blazer. Nope, women's sizes only get navy & black. That must be why I wear a blac k jacket every day. *sniff*)

K&M & I met Petra & Jen at Amira for dinner. Wednesday nights some subset of Fat Chance dance there. It was really great and so was the food and company. We shared around a number of dishes - lamb kabob, kefta araby (with ses ame sauce), apricot chicken, pastilla and a veggie combo all washed down with a nice enough cabernet. I notice that I am looking at tribal style dancing differently now that I understand the mechanics better. Very cool stuff.

I got home after 11pm and s o did not manage to set up tea with Carole this morning which is just as well because my alarm did not get me up. I evidently turned it off and turned over until Russell's went off. And I do have a FULL day ahead! Work followed by a Bridge interfaith meet ing. *yawn* I hope I can concentrate by the time I get to that meeting!

Roaming Macworld

I too spent the day roaming Macworld. For the first time in years, I did not run into a single person I know. That made it quite easy to see the whole thing in the alloted 5 hours -- no misadventures, no chatting, no shouting to be heard above the din of special effects and techno-bimbos with microphones. I even sat through several presentations/indoctrinations in the Apple Pavilion. Funny you mention Kurt. During one of the software presentations (was it Keynote?) I found myself thinking. "Gosh, this is almost as cool as OpenDoc." But the presenter was NOWHERE near as good as Kurt. *sigh*

Those small laptops are TEMPTING. The big laptops (17 inch monitor) have auto-lit keyboards; I want that.

Oh well, at least I found the Peet's stand and bought a funn y bumpersticker from the EFF and a monitor cleaning kit. And I developed a resolve that I must learn how to use OSX. One of our home computers is running 10.1, all I have to do is e n t e r t h e r o o m a n d p u s h t h e b u t t o n. . . very soon now. If you hear of overview/training materials, please advise. I realize I'm probably not supposed to need a manual, but I don't want to turn out like the switch guy in the video!

I didn't run into anyone I knew this year either. Isn't that funny. I was glad to have gone with friends though 'cause they noticed things I didn't and vice versa. I think I saw more that way.

I didn't notice the lighted keyboard on the 17", how cool.

*LOL* It is being *really* hard to contemplate changing to OS X. I'm afraid I'll come in Monday and they'll have done it. (I told the sys admin he could.) Will it still be my Mac!? Eeek!

MacWorld, X, etc

I've felt that the amount of inteeresting stuff is too low to make MacWorld worth my while for the last couple of years. Most of what's interesting and novel comes from Apple itself, and I can see that at the local Apple store. Almost everything else is a fraction of what's already available in the PC world. I just end up feeling like I spent 8 hours (including 1.5 hrs travel each way via train) and got very sore feet to see 5 new things. Having friends to visit with and share snide comments with would make it more palatable!

As for X, I think it's about as different as going from 9 to Windows. If you found learning Windows painful, I suspect you'll find X onerous, and if not, not.

I think Apple's turning into Bang & Olufson, and the Powerbooks are cool but partly a matter of playing to your strenghts -- "we have to push notebooks and be cooler and easier because our desktop machines are all 2-3X slower than cheaper Intel boxes (with no improvement likely in the near future), with a tiny fraction of the software and peripherals available (with no improvement likely ever)". I'll probably upgrade to X when I have to replace my machine, but I'll give serious consideration to saving some $$$ and switching to Windows.

Hard to believe you're wearing black every day!
