Onward to the West Country

We took a cab to Paddington and had a very nice first class train ride to Bodmin Parkway, arriving about 2pm. We picked up our rental car and headed off toward Boscastle. As we passed Washaway and saw the sign for Pencarrow, I said, I've heard of that, its a stately home. And Russell asked if I wanted to stop and see it. So we did. It is a lovely home that has been in the Molesworth family for centuries (and they still live there now hyphenated Molesworth-St Aubyn). Our tour guide, Sheila, was a droll grandmotherly type and added a lot to the story. Naturally there was an upstairs but they actually had a DVD tour which I and another disabled woman watched whilst the rest of the party traipsed through above us. I suspect Sheila's stories were much better than the dry DVD but it was really nice to be able to see it!
Then off we went through the narrow hedge-lined lanes of Cornwall toward Boscastle. I remember these lanes so well... and yet we keep coming back to this country. As soon as we started down the cliffs to Boscastle the cell service cut out as the taxi driver in Bodmin had told us it would. Makes navigating by iPhone GPS extra zesty. Oh well, we were close enough that we stopped at a petrol station for directions.
Our hotel, The Wellington, is a listed house and thus has no improvements like lifts. I knew that though as they let me know when I made the reservation with that note that I have limited mobility. It does have charm, although Russell fears for his head around the ceilings and lintels, and I doubt there is a straight beam in the house due to sagging with age. But the food in the pub was lovely. I had boar sausages and cider and Russell had fish & chips and guinness. And at 9pm every Wednesday the local folk club comes by to sing. I sat in for a bit over an hour really enjoying the music.
So for the next few days we won't have much contact with the outside world, but I am excited about visiting the museum and the area looks worth exploring for the sights as well. Although it rained much of today, so we'll see about that exploring thing.
Also there is zero cell service as mentioned above and really, really slow and spotty wifi at the Wellington. It took me 30 minutes to post this blog entry!
