A exhibit of the Space Art by Rosmairta Kilara (Rowan Fairgrove) will be shown at the Talis Sci Fi & Fantasy Portal on Info Island (187,110,33). The Opening Reception will be February 23, 2007, 7pm-9pm SL time. The show will be open until April 27, 2007.
Rowan Fairgrove is an artist, librarian and a member of the San Francisco Bay area science fiction fan community. Her artwork has appeared at the BayCon art show over the years. The two series of paintings represented here are from the late 1990's when she left her brushes aside and tried her hand at computer-generated art. The Space Art was created using Adobe Photoshop and the Alien Tiles were done in Fractal Design Painter 5.0.
In-world, Rosmairta Kilara is Lady of Falkenrath, an estate in the Onnuri sim on the mainland where she and her partner Scarlotti Pimpernel have created a garden and woodland setting. She works with the Consumer Health Library on Health Info Island and started the Special Librarians of Second Life with an office in Cybrary City I. She participates in many projects around the Info Archipelago.
In the Space Art series Rowan was trying to capture the majesty of NASA's intersteller imagery - vast clouds of dust, gas and plasma kissed by lambent light. The addition of suns and planets brings the galactic closer to human scale. Rowan sees these as glimpses from the diary of a space traveler who takes pictures of interesting scenes out the viewport.
In Alien Tiles Rowan was experimenting with capturing random bits of foil and mardi gras beads with a scanner. She was amazed when aliens started appearing in her kaleidescopic images! She sees these as, perhaps, images one might see when looking up from the table after an alien abduction.
