Highlights of the last couple of days

It has been a fairly quiet week at work in the run-up to the holiday. So I have had time to obssess about buying a new GPSr and balance the phone vs pda vs gps equation a dozen different ways in my head. The amazing and wonderful [livejournal.com profile] mr_kurt had abetted me in my distress by making sure I get coin quest caches at lunch each day. Today the office let us go at 3pm so we skipped lunch and went caching at 2pm. We got four, all quest-related. Only one more cache and I'll be at 600! And big shout out congrats to [livejournal.com profile] rubibees on hitting 50! Milestones are fun. *grin*

The wonderful Workerofwood lent me a Garmin 60CSx for the weekend and lo-and-behold it can talk to my mac. I had thought the later models didn't have serial ports, but evidently they do. This is their top of the line sirf3 model. I am in lust. It lists for $540. *eek* We'll see if I can find a used one.

My Second life moves apace. I have an office in Cybrary City but I really don't see myself keeping it. It is a huge space! Lorelei said they'd be moving someone else into half of it, but we'll see. If [livejournal.com profile] spikeiowa had a better machine at work it would be really fun to have an office together and see what kind of presence would make sense for special librarians in that environment. SL is still getting mega-publicity - a big centerfold in this week's Business Week. And I really like this clip of Second Life via a BBC new item on YouTube. *shakes head in wonder*

Second Life

There was a HUGE spread on Second Life - in Finnish of course - in the Helsingin Sanomat Sunday edition this week, with a digitally drawn image of a couple sky-diving as the illustration. Seems there are now problems with so many 'residents' moving in; not everyone who wants to can get online at the same time. Australia has decided to TAX income made through Second Life. I wonder how they think they are going to be able to do that? And, there was a comment on how sad it was that some people have moved their entire lives to virtual space, citing a man who lives there every waking moment since his wife left him (for spending too much time online? one wonders). I myself do not want to invest that much time and energy in a fantasy. I'd rather be taking part in Red Cross training courses and applying for posts as an international delegate, meantime hoping to be 'called up' to serve in an emergency... But, I can certainly see the appeal!! Some interesting figures and comparisons with other 'online worlds' that people live in, especially Worlds of Warcraft, which evidently maintains tight control over content, instead of allowing the 'anarchy' of resident construction that is Second Life. Plus, I didn't know that IBM and other large companies, especially communications firms like AT&T, have a presence there! Fascinating.

What would you want in your office? Anything I could help with?

What kind of services do you think special librarians should offer? I have put a link to patent info and will probably be doing some kind of more explanatory pathfinder. If you'd like to set up shop with me, I'd love to have you! What is your SL name?

"If spikeiowa had a better machine at work it would be really fun to have an office together.."

That would be so COOL!!! I haven't given up, I will commence my lobbying after the holiday.
