Speaking my Geek - Where's George?
Sep. 13th, 2011 04:01 pmSo, I've been trying to think about what to write about today for Speak Geek. I know I said yesterday that I'm behind on my Where's George and Geocaching, but really, as Kurt says, I have am a fan of the logging sports. So today, "Where's George? The Great American Dollar Bill Locator."
Where's George was started by Hank Eskin in 1998 mostly because he wanted to try out some database and web software (his day job was as a database architect).
How it works: A user registers an e-mail address at the site and enters the serial code and year of each bill he or she wants to track, as well as the Zip code where each bill was found. The user then writes "www.wheresgeorge.com" on the bills and spends them. With any luck, a future owner of one of those bills will notice the writing and check out the Web site. If a finder joins and enters the bill in the system, the site will alert the person who registered it.
I started Georging on July 9, 2002 after reading about it in my friend's Livejournal. In a way this is sad - most people start georging when they find a marked bill and the person who sent that wild out into the world is they "George parent". I had my first hit on August 1, 2002 after entering about 65 bills. I'm an orphan! But there is a wonderful Where's George community and the lack of a parent hasn't really hindered my enjoyment.
Over the subsequent years I have entered (as of Sept 13, 2011) 19,683 Bills worth $100,486. I have 2,894 bills with hits (of which some have been hit multiple times for total hits of 3,429). That is a hit rate of 14.7%. My initial entries with hits have traveled a total of 1,659,602 miles.
They have averaged 507.6 miles per hit and 174.79 days between each hit.
For a long time I was in the top 50 California Georgers but I have fallen behind and usually rank in the 60s. For a long time I was a frequent attendee at local Bay Area and up to Sacramento Where's George Gatherings. I've also gone to national gatherings and western gatherings and met Georgers when I was on the road for conferences.
In addition to hits in the United States, Puerto Rico (3) and American Samoa; I have hits in Anguilla, Canada (2), Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, India, Mexico (4), UK (2), Germany (2), Pakistan (2), Iraq, Kuwait, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand. And um, somewhere else in the last couple of weeks that I didn't get around to writing down.
In the last nine years I have learnt a lot about currency, visited the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco and hung out with a lot of crazy, fun people. SO.... do YOU ever wonder where your money goes?
