Busy Sunday
Today was a lovely day. A bit of email answering as I slowly woke up to full capacity (I'm just not a late night person) followed by leftover Italian whilst Russell and I watched The Celluloid Closet. I had heard about it when it came out but never having cable hadn't managed to see it. Great film. I remember many the films and Susie Bright really captured some of the things I thought about growing up. That hunger to see someone like me despite how tortured and twisted (and dead in the end of the film) the queer character might be. *laugh* I remember when I got up at a screening and asked Russ Meyer why every character who had a homosexual encounter had to die by the end of the movie and if he made Beyond the Valley of the Dolls today did he think it would still be necessary. Mr. Meyer appeared to be quite blitzed on something and my question was obviously beyond his capacity. He claimed never to have noticed or thought about it. I don't know whether to believe that or not. Anyway The Celluloid Closet was an amazing look at the image of queer people in film and was incredibly well done.
Then I ran off to Kurt & Marina's anniversary dinner. Thank goodness (or the weather deities) that the day was fair for my drive over 17. I am not a comfortable hill driver in the best of circumstances and I was very grateful it wasn't stormy. Luncheon was lovely... salad with figs, walnuts and goat cheese; fred roast, potato rolls; peas and mushrooms (with choice of wines); all followed by madeira and a lovely chocolate yule log cake. The other guests were Kurt's mother and her husband,
rutemple and her partner Lise and Bennett and Kim. It was really nice seeing old friends and meeting Kurts family. Although I'm quite sure the method that led me back to the freeway was neither the one recommended by Marina nor by Ruth I did in fact make it safely back to San Jose. I am now icing my shoulder and catching up on friends journals. Soon to bed.
