Letter memage

I have been given the letter "D" by
songcoyote, with the idea being that I will come up with 10 words that start with D and what they mean to me. Anyone who wishes to perpetuate this meme may do so by requesting that I assign them a letter. Anyone who does not may read on should they desire to do so!
1. Dervish
For some reason the first word that comes to mind is Dervish. I think the idea of whirling trancefulness getting one into direct contact with the divine appeals to me. I'm a mystic at heart.
2. Divine
After that I suppose Divine has to be the next word. From the Indo-European Devi, I believe. Via Latin Divus. That amazing emergent quality of the universe that allows us to know we're all connected. Which connection allows divination to work. And who can't like a word that allows Drag Queens everywhere the ability to purr, "Darling, you look DIVINE!"
3. Dionysos
While were talking of the divine who could be more divine than my patron Dionysos. To quote a devotional page I used to have at sacred.to before it just got to be too much effort to maintain a Tongan domain name, "The celebration of Dionysos is a return to the mystic purity and sublime freedom of nature. The central practices are ecstatic trance dancing, cross-dressing or animal guising and the sacrifice of an animal which is eaten raw." and "He is untamed nature and also the one who taught the cultivation of grapes and the making of intoxicants to humankind. His gift brings mystery and ecstacy to those who follow him and madness and despair to those who deny his power."
4. Diadem
I've always loved the word Diadem. I sounds so much more regal than Tiara. I love wearing crowns, moon crowns, flower crowns, crowns bedecked with ribbons. As many who know me know, I do own a red tiara. I got it from the Red Hat Society. I don't think I own a crown that qualifies as a Diadem in my mind though. Hmm.
5. Depression
I suppose I have to say Depression, a "D" word that has figured in my life off and on since my teenage years. The availability of serotonin reuptake inhibitors made a huge difference in my quality of life.
6. Damask
Damask is such a lovely word denoting interesting patterns in textiles and the wonderful wavey pattern of Damascus steel. Then there is the damask rose from which the heavenly attar is derived. A lovely word really.
7. Derbyshire
Derbyshire is the region in which I lived when first I left the home of my parents. I worked at a walking hostel near the village of Hope. I spent a lot of time walking around the Dark Peak and along the Pennine Way. I remember a past life there as a miner in those hills.
8. Dassie
When I went to South Africa for the Parliament in 1999, we met some Hyrax or Dassies on table mountain. It is quite amazing that their closest genetic relative is the elephant and yet they look rather than guinea pigs. They had a great fondness for Don Frew and we teased him about finding his true totem.
9. Daffodil
That brings us to Daffodil which is one of my favorite flowers. I love the ones someone planted along 280. In the spring I drive along exulting, "Daffs!!!" which is all very well when I'm alone in the car but any passenger gets a bit tired of it. A few years ago driving through Wales I really drove Russell crazy.
Wow, I am down to only one more! I am not a glib writer and thinking of "D" words was a hard exercise but fun!
10. Dancing
Dancing is a form of exercise and social contact that I have enjoyed. I have done Highland Dancing, bellydancing, Royal Scottish Country Dance Society dances, English Country Dancing, Contra Dancing and Ballroom Dancing at various times in my life. Currently I am bellydancing and occasionally making it down to Santa Cruz for English Country Dancing. I'd like to have more opportunities to dance in my life. I should check out the Starlite Ballroom in Sunnyvale but I really wish I was closer to Ashkenaz in Berkeley.
