Second Life, Microlending and Serenity
Apr. 7th, 2007 09:00 amI spent most of Friday inworld banging my head against the Hair Fair, an annual event put on by the hair designers of Second Life. It was totally insane with way too many avatars trying to be in one place at one time. I crashed repeatedly and it was only at 4am Saturday morning that I finally managed to buy the do I had picked out. Then I immediately crashed again... so pictures will have to wait. I got a great Scarlet O'Hara do. Now I need a good Southern Belle dress to wear it with. *grin* I showed the demo to
mr_kurt and he thinks it looks like
gwebbyhead hair except for the very Scarlett front styling. *grin* I have always admired Gwen's hair. I also spent a lot of time working on the gardens for Renaissance Island. Minerva and I made the beds and walkways for the peasant's garden and I feel rather accomplished.
While I was online I listened to a lot of NPR and I heard a really interesting show on a microlending organization that lets people make loans for specific people. Russell and I have supported the Grameen Bank for years (and will continue to do so) but I made a microloan toward the business expansion plans of a Beekeeper in Azerbaijan. I love the idea that once her loan is fully funded I'll get reports on how her business goes. It is the same impulse, I'm sure, that leads me to sponsor children through Childreach, a sense of connection with lives half the planet away. (My current Childreach childred are in Uganda and Sri Lanka.)
Russell and I went to "dinner" at the Smoke Tiki Bar downtown and it was to yum. They have $2.95 appetizers during happy hour and we drank mai tais and ate excellent pu pu. I will definitely be back! Then the jazz band started up and whilst they were good it made conversation difficult. We came home and watched Serenity, comparing how the HD version (he got from Netflix) and the DVD version (that I own) look on our big TV. I really still am a Browncoat even though I haven't done anything with Silicon Gulch in awhile. I know there are Browncoats in SL... perhaps it is time to finally look for them. I met someone awhile back wearing Mal's brown outfit complete with guns. Maybe someone has done Inara. *grin*
