in Minehead
May. 1st, 2003 11:26 amI had the great plan of carrying my paper journal to update my electronic one but I find myself unexpectedly online and thought I should check in. :-) We stopped at the Minehead library to look for a book someone mentioned with hobby horse pictures. We didn't find it but they do have free internet access!
We safely arrived in Taunton after a very long day of travel and went and wondered around the town (it being merely mid-day). We looked in at the Somerset History museum and looked at lots of pottery and other artifacts. They had a nice iron age shield, a Roman mosaic and other nice bits. You never know what you'll find in these small museums!
April 30 we went on to Minehead with stops at a Cider Farm to taste (and buy) some cider. I had a nice chat with the owner and also tasted some rose petal wine which tasted exactly the way one might imagine it would.
We stopped at Dunster Castle and toured it. We had gone to Dunster Village our last trip but hadn't seen the Castle. It was been continuously inhabited for 900 years (by only two families!). A very nice property with a family feel. We chatted up a National Trust steward who told us all kinds of stories. Evidently the last of the family are in their 80's and occasionally drop by to show vistors around off hours. I said I thought someone needed to do an oral history before they were gone but I guess they don't really have the person-power to do that. *sigh*
On to Minehead where we went to the Old Ship Aground for Warning Eve (the first appearance of the Sailor's Horse). Since our trip in 1989 they have a rival Sailor's Horse that was started after a fistfight between the principals about eight years ago. Evidently it is quite a dust up with bad feelings on both sides. *sigh* We spent most of our time so far with the original Horse but would like to hear the side of the new fellows. The new ones have revived a Town Horse so that there are three horses to follow about. :-) Today, May morning we were up at White Cross at 6am where all three horses started their day's walk about. Both had talked about crowning a May Queen there but none were in evidence. Oh well. Tonight the orignal team will be at Dunster (Castle & Village) and we plan to head out there.
