my weekend

Well, this big weekend is over. Teri & Bob's 120th birthday party went off despite the rain (the ride over Hwy 17 was the worst I've *ever* seen it!). The rooms are a *little* small for a Morris Team in full stick dance to have any actual spectators but the folks were having enough fun dancing that that didn't really seem like a hindrance. The food was fabulous. Teri had prepared *lots* of salmon and side dishes and this crew are all folks who think any party is an excuse to cook. I think I mostly spent the afternoon eating! We decided to head home before dark rather than face 17 in the rain and that was probably a good idea. There was this accident around a blind curve that would have been much harder to avoid in the dark. We didn't get to stay late enough for cake and present opening, which I always enjoy. *sniff*
Sunday dawned grey and rainy. But I looked at the doppler and we had done a good job of pushing the rain storm inland. We got up to Berkeley (passing through a really bad storm patch) to find it partly cloudy and warm enough that I left my wool cloak in the car. I went over to the peace altar with the Parliament banners and large mural print (the best I could do). Katya immediately grabbed me to check in and talk to the (non-existent) media. *sigh* We had more reporters last year. I guess Return of the Snakes was a sexier media draw than Ancient Voices. Nonetheless, I sat in the media tent for awhile and said "hi" to the other folks who were supposed to have been at the press briefing.
Meanwhile all sorts of colorful folk began gathering in the meadow. The sun played hide and seek with clouds and when cloudy a cold wind cut through my clothes. I heartily wished for my cloak! Micha called the line up and thanked everyone in turn as they brought they contingent and got ready to march. About then we got word that the City of Berkeley had revoked our side road closures. So rather than having all the cross streets to Telegraph closed for the parade we would have to stop at lights. More traffic guardians were quickly recruited. This made us get under way about 15 minutes late. At which time it started to rain. I guess all the weatherworkers' attention got caught up in traffic guardians. Bah! That was the last gasp of the rain for the day but I felt particularly sorry for the Aztec dancers who were definitely dressed for a different climate! I huddled under Russell's cape when I could (like when stopped at traffic lights). Don (last year's marshal) marched with us carrying the "Parade Marshalls" sign. We had a bagpiper striding before us. It was really rather a kick.
After parading our way up Telegraph we regrouped in the park for many speeches and performances. Russell and I started off with being handed a carved staff by Don to pass on the marshal-ship (we thought this should have happened before the Parade but Micha said no-one would see it that way. *LOL*). As soon as we were done speaking, I ran over to Bongo Burger and grabbed some takeout and hurried back. I was *starving* by then! The Persian (lamb) burger was great and I ate too many french fries because they were warm and I was so cold! I sat back at the press tent and watched the proceedings. Russell came by and gave me his cloak and then walked up to the car and got mine for me. Blessed man! You would think I had lived in California long enough to know not to trust the weather! I hated that as a kid, always having to carry a coat. The child becomes the woman. *grin*
At 4pm when our sound permit expired we helped with clean up a bit and then headed over to Berkeley Sauna to have a hot tub and get warm. (A theme!) It was really just what I needed. We then met
ocean_song who had just driven up from Southern California for dinner at Fat Apple's before heading to the Parade after party with Pandemonaeon. The evening started with Tara's belly dancing and then a performance piece by Theatre 451. Their piece was interesting and I complimented them on it. Dan said it was hard to figure out what to do in a venue where they couldn't use fire since they are usually fire dancers. A definite problem. After that it was Pandemonaeon and I headed to the dance floor. It is *so* nice to be able to dance again! Russell joined me for a couple of numbers and it was really fun to dance together. We had agreed we couldn't stay past 9:30 though and we dutifully headed home. My head hit the pillow at 10:45 and 5am still comes too darn early. It was a long but lovely day.
While the rest of the world is trying to get landmines eliminated because they cause so much collateral damage. What is the US doing - working on self-healing hopping land mines -- http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/5/30225.html Y'know, I am finding it really hard to hold my head up and say "I'm an American" at the moment.
